Africana Mentoring Program

The eyes of our future are looking back at us, praying for us to see beyond our own time.

Overview
The Africana Mentoring Program helps first year students with their transition to Duke University life, academically and socially. This student facilitated program provides academic enrichment, exposure to resources and informal social support to Black students. The program aims to address the sense of alienation that some students may feel when embarking on higher education at a predominately white institution. Thus, the overarching goal is to increase a sense of environmental comfort and encourage the pursuit of excellence in all things as Duke students.
Each entering student who applies to participate is matched with a pairing of members of the junior and senior classes to aid in their transition. The framework of the AMP program is built around an opening event, training and matching events, opportunities for study sessions, academic engagement events, the provision of resource guides and referral to additional resources and opportunities. The mentors and mentees are expected to meet throughout the school year individually, in addition to attending events together and aiding each other during study time.
It is the vision of the program to eventually include participation of various others including graduate and professional students, faculty, staff and alumni. AMP is advised by the director of the Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture, which is also where its office is located.
Events for AMP ’09-’10 will be available at the start of the academic year. Watch this webpage for updates and postings of AMP related items.
